It&#8217;s really important that we remember all those who have sacrificed their selves for Canada,\u201d says Pakistani-Canadian Muslim soldier, Lieutenant Haseeb Malik from the Canadian Grenadier Guards. <em><strong>Fariha Naqvi-Mohamed of City News Montreal reports!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant Haseeb Malik of the Canadian Grenadier Guards might look a little different from his peers as a Pakistani Canadian Muslim soldier. His parents immigrated to Montreal from Pakistan in the early 1990s, and he could not be prouder of his roots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy grandfather served in the Pakistani armed forces and historically I had family members that served as well,\u201d said Lt. Malik. \u201cI remember joining initially I was worried that I was going to be singled out. And then he came back with, you know, halal food for me specifically. And, you know, he did he went out of his way just to do that. And again, they did this voluntarily. And for me to be at this position, I owe it all to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As we near Remembrance Day, Milak stresses how important it is to honour those who fought for our rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur peace doesn\u2019t come for free. And again, it\u2019s really important that we remember all those who have sacrificed their selves for Canada,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s for us as Canadians to remember those who have served and those who are currently serving.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for advice the Lieutenant might give to children from diverse backgrounds who may be interested in a career in the army.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say give it a try. It\u2019s a great place to build character. You\u2019re going to meet you\u2019re going to build yourself both physically and mentally. And don\u2019t be scared. This is Canada, our strength comes from its diversity. So, they\u2019ll be welcome with open arms.
